ABOUT THIS SITE.
ABOUT THE DVD.

A year ago, the production company Wide Angle - in partnership with The Tank Museum, Bovington, UK - began production on a new DVD about the Tiger tank.

The aim is to produce the 'definitive' video, examining every aspect of the tank and its history in greater depth than has been achieved before on film or video.

As you'd expect, the DVD will draw on archive stills, WW2 film, veteran interviews and expert opinion. But to bring aspects of the tank into greater focus, there will also be extensive use of animation.

As a bonus, since the Tank Museum has the only Tiger 1 in the world still running, there will be new footage of the tank in high-definition widescreen.

In creating the video, we accumulated enormous amounts of material, not all of which could go into the DVD and we felt that enthusiasts might like access to this - including the core material that has been used.

Our plan is to make this a key historical site for anyone who loves tanks and, as you can see from the navigation, there should be plenty of material.

The DVD itself is in editing now and should be available by the end of July. So watch this space.

Or if you'd like to be notified when it becomes available, drop us a line to info@wideangle.co.uk and we'll send you the link.

TIGER TANK: THE LEGEND

65 years after the last Tiger tank drove off the production line, it exerts a fascination unequalled by any other tank, past or present.

In a short production run of barely two years and just 1,350 tanks, the Tiger became a legend on the battlefield

More has been written about the Tiger tank than any other tank past or present.

Arguably, there were better tanks, built in far larger numbers - the Panther for one - that made more of a real difference to the balance of power on the ground, yet nevertheless failed to match the reputation of the Tiger.

Technical reasons for its fame are easy to identify: Quite simply, at the time of its appearance it was the biggest tank in the world.

Nothing else came close to its lethal combination of very thick armour matched by the world's most effective tank-killing gun.

But legends aren't born out of technicalities - but out of actions.

And it was what the Tiger's unique specification allowed it to do, that gave rise to the legend.

On occasion, just one or two Tiger tanks could completely reverse the odds on the battlefield, even when massively outnumbered.

This was what established the legend, instilling fear and respect in Allied tank crews:

The Tiger tank's incredible kill ratio.

'Saving the Tiger' is the first video we made with The Tank museum about their Tiger 131. It tracks the history of the vehicle from its capture in unusual circumstances in Tunisia, right down to the present day. Following the second rebuild (after a orevious engine failure) the video follows the race against time to ready the tank for the Museum's annual Tankfest.

Uniquely, the DVD contains interviews with Peter Gudgin who, after his Churchill had been knocked out by this very same Tiger, went on to analyse the vehicle for the British War Office when it was returned to England and, later, wrote what is still the definitive book on all variants of the Tiger 'Tiger Tanks.'

The DVD also includes the complete 8-minute Tiger Recognition film created by the War Office.

Main feature: 47mins. Extras: 21mins.
Available in PAL only.
